FLORIDA WAS BUILT ON AN ANT HILL
University of Florida Update

Dealing with ants in Floridais a full time job. Ants are highly organized and very efficient at their jobs. They invade our homes and businesses in great numbers, nesting anywhere from the attic spcae down to the foundation. There are only a few native species left as ants from other countries have invaded Florida over the years. The "Terror Ants" Florida is subject to now are the Red Improted Fire Ant and the European Fire Ant which can give you a painful sting. Other less-known terror ants are the elongated twig ant and the little fire ant. The twig ant specializes in suprise attacks, jumping from trees to sting people in the neck. Terror ants are part of our lives here in Florida.
War on Terror Ants will protect our way of life, save our native fauna and even save human lives.

THE LAWN AND ORNAMENTAL WAR
Over the summer months, the invaders are Sod web Worms, Chinch Bugs and several types of fungus, Brown patch being the worst in the lawn. Caterpillars, grasshoppers, mealy bugs, fungus and scale affect the shrubs. Regular treatment every other month is recommended. Our palm trees need regular care also, as most are not native to Florida. There are a host of insects, fungus and air bourn disorders that affect most palms. No matter the situation, experts agree that maintaining over-all health is the most affevtive weapon.

SCAM ALERT
Medical records are the mother lode for identify theft. This is not like a credit card where the bank eats the loss. The victim often has to pay for care not received. With patient health records becomming all computerized, cyber criminals see the opportunity. Protect yourself; require patient photo ID, copy everything in your medical file, read everything you get from insurers even if it says "this is not a bill", monitor your credit report at www.AnulaCreditReport.com, don't carry medical cards in your wallet or purse: make a photocopy and obscure the social security number and lastly, avoid Internet and storefront offers for free treatment.

A HEALTHIER WORLD
According to a 15-year study presented at the Toranto Indoor Air conference, women who work at home have a 54% higher death rate from cancer than those who work away from home. The study concluded that this was a direct result of the increased exposure to toxic chemicals, many of which are found in common household products. More that 9 out of 10 suspected poison exposures occur at home with household products. An EPA sutdy found that toxic chemicals in household cleaners ar three times more likely to cause cancer than outdoor air pollution. Of 2,983 chemicals analyzed that are found in person care products: 884 are toxic, 146 can cause tumors, 218 can cause reproductive complications, 778 cause acute toxicity, 314 cause biological mutations and 376 cause skin and eye irritation.

WATCH OUT FOR HITCHHIKERS!!!
BED BUGS HAVE BECOME A REAL PROBLEM
Bed bugs are a blood-feeding insect that feast mostly on the blood of humans. Feeding at night, we may not be aware of the bed bug's presence until the population has become overwhelming. Bed bugs infest homes, hospitals, subways, movie theathers, hotels and planes just to name a few and can live for a year without a blood meal. A single female can start a whole new infestation. Bed bugs infest cracks and crevices, furniture, behind pitures and mirrors, and wall outlets and will "hitchhike" on clothing, in suitcases and used furniture. The cryptic nature of the bed bug makes it difficult to detect, locate and treat. Early detection makes it less expensive to treat and treatment more successful. (University of Florida)

HEAT STRESS & WATERING PRACTICES
Because the days are getting warmer and longer, watering should be increased as needed. Coverage and proper amounts of water is critical. One inch in full sun areas and one half inch in shaded areas is recommended per watering. BROWN SPOTS in the lawn can occur if there is not adequate water coverage. SHRUBS WILL WITHER and die off without adquatewater. Over the next two months, our treatments will include ORGANIC GRANULAR FERTILIZER APPLICATIONS  and GURB TREATMENTS along with our regularly scheduled treatments.

ROOT INJECTIONS FOR PALMS AND OTHER TREES
Palms and other trees are susceptible to a host of dis-eases including PALM BORERS, GANODERMA BUTT ROT, LETHAL YELLOWING and malnutrition just to name a few. To help our beautiful trees stay healthy, fight off disease and survive cold weather conditions, it is improtant to stay ahead of the game by feeding a good diet of proper granular fertilizer four times per year and root injections f major and minor nutrients plus a mild insecticide. While there is not cure for Ganoderma or Lethal Yellowing, staying as healthy as possible is the best defense.

A HEALTHIER WORLD
With very little attention given to preventative health care these days, it is important we take care of ourselves so we don't get sick. Many factors affect our health in many ways.
So here are a few health tips from DR. OZ, courtesy of AARP magazine, May & June issue.

DAILY CHECK LIST
1. Walk 30 minutes per day. Working out has benefits for heart, weight and even your sex life.
It may also stave off Alzheimer's as new research finds.
2. Brush and floss. Brushing removes only about 60 percent of germs from between teeth. Flossing is important.
3. Sleep 7 to 8 hours a night. Proper sleep repairs cells and raises growth hormone levels which can increase bone density and decrease body fat.
4. Drinking two cups of green tea in the am lessens the risk of some cancers and lowers cholesterol.
5. Take 400 mg of DHA omega 3's, 1000 IU of vitamin D and 1000 MG calciun per day. Calicum and vitamin D boost bone density and omegas diminish cognitive decline.
6. Mediate for 5 minutes. Yoga, prayer and meditation reduce stress.

Ask three strangers how old they think you are. Their answers are an indictor of how healthy you are.

SPRING IS HERE!!!
Now is the time to trim back the shrubs and plant new ones after the frost this past winter. Putting down a w\ell balanced shrub and palm granular fertilizer as well as a shrub liquid treatment of pesticide, fungicide and triple 20 liquid fertilzier will help in recovery. Healthy plants, palm trees and lawns recover faster and fight off diseases, so be sure to fertilize on a regular schedule. This would be four times per year for shrubs and trees and three times for lawns.
ROOT INJECTION AND ANTIBIOTIC CONTROL will be helpful for palm trees.

"The New Year is here! Happy 2010

DOES IT REALLY GET COLD IN FLORIDA?

Yes, it does freeze here in beautiful sunny Southwest Florida. So here are some tips for you. COOL WEATHER WATERING: be sure to cut back watering as the shrubs and lawn do not need as much water in periods of cooler weather and shorter days.
FROST DAMAGE: Winter damage is caused not only by low temperatures, but also by drying winds. Move potted plants indoors. If it has been dry, thoroughly watering the landscape before a freeze will reduce freeze damage. Plants may be covered with sheets, not plastic. Remove the sheets the next day. Christmas lights in the shrubs will give off heat and help protect the plants. If plants are damaged, do not prune, remove or replace until the Spring. This will do more damage if another frost comes.

JUST TO LET YOU KNOW

We are applying Pre-emergent's to the lawn to help stop the weed seeds from maturing. Topical broadleaf weed treatments are performed thru-out the cooler months. Some wild grasses go dormant causing brown spots to appear in the lawn. February and March are important for granular fertilizer because it gives the lawn and shrubs a good start after the winter.

Yes, Florida has a change of seasons!
We have dry season, wet season, hurricane season and tourist season.

“The holiday season is upon us as another year draws to a close. We wish you and yours well and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

THERE’S A FUNGUS MOUNG US.
“Air, water, animals, equipment and people carry fungi long distances and can develop almost over night. Fungi steal nutrients from the plants and turf. Fungus season runs from late fall to spring. St. Augustine grasses are affected by various fungi. They are RUST, LEAF SPOT, PYTHIUM ROOT ROT AND RHIZCOTONIA BROWN PATCH. Symptoms range from patches in the lawn to spots on the blades of grass themselves. Lawns an shrubs that are already stresses are more susceptible. Rhizoctonia will attack and kill Plumbago shrubs quickly. Wet conditions; too much irrigation or rain and long periods of high humidity will set this fungus in motion. As the weather gets cooler, watering should be cut back accordingly. Remember, less water in the shade!

OTHER PEST PROBLEMS
WHITE GRUB WORMS appear in the soil anywhere from the surface to 24 inches down and are most visible in fall and spring. Generally, Grubs feed in the same areas year after year. Chafer Beetles and May and June Bugs lay eggs in the soil. Grubs hatch from the eggs and begin feeding on the grass roots. One to two treatments per year are necessary. PALM TREE BORERS are always a problem here in sunny Florida. If you suspect a problem with any of your palms, please call.
